James B. Matthews III

Burn Injuries Attorney James B. Matthews III

Before he joined the legal team of Blasingame, Burch, Garrard & Ashley, P.C., Jim Matthews dreamed of a career playing Major League Baseball.

After playing baseball at Georgia Southern, Matthews went in the 10th round of the 1978 amateur draft to the Atlanta Braves. Unfortunately, in that same draft, the Braves picked another third baseman, Bob Horner, in the first round.

“So, after a few years I realized I was not going to play for the Braves,” Jim says in a recent Georgia Super Lawyers profile. “Law was my fallback.”

The baseball world’s loss has been a gain for Matthews’ clients.

After earning his law degree from the University of Georgia in 1983 and being admitted to the Georgia bar in that same year, Matthews went to work defending medical malpractice claims.

However, after helping the family of a small child who had been burned in a match incident recover $2 million in compensation, he decided to switch to the plaintiff side of the bar. He has since dedicated his practice to representing severely injured personal injury victims.

Being a part of the Blasingame, Burch, Garrard & Ashley, P.C., legal team has been a truly rewarding experience, he says.

“All of our lawyers are truly respected by other lawyers and judges,” he says. “And we never hesitate to put the necessary resources into our cases.”

Although he didn’t make it onto a Major League roster, Jim never left baseball. For several years, he has scouted for the St. Louis Cardinals, collecting a World Series ring in 2006.

Jim also enjoys spending time with his wife and three children.
